Whatever its origins, “Leaf by Niggle” must rank as one of the finest short stories of the twentieth century, breath-takingly beautiful, even by the highest Tolkienian standards. As with so many of Tolkien’s writings, “Leaf” takes seriously issues of goodness, free will, destiny, subcreation, and eternity.
The power beauty has on moral judgment is demonstrated in “Leaf by Niggle” through Niggle’s journey. As Niggle advances through the different stages of his artwork, he develops a greater sense of appreciation for the pieces he created.

Tree and Leaf is actually two separate sections as well: a short story titled Leaf by Niggle, and a (now famous) essay by Tolkien called On Fairy Stories. This is, in my humble opinion, the best portion of the book. On Fairy Stories is easily my favorite essay of all-time. If you’ve never read it.
